We've got a way to save our Cheap BMW i8 Supercar's Blown Engine without replacing it and spending over $10,000 on a new one, but will it work? Also, Rich sends Sam something to help him along the way; credit goes to Anthony Jeselnik who created this bit!

  • 5 thou is nothing, just chop it down, the machine shop just didn't want to be responsible for any potential problems. Which there won't be.

  • That machine shop heard BMW I8 and just didn’t want to get involved. He stopped at .005”. There is no problem with taking .010” off a head. Typical piston to valve clearance is at least .080-.100” so you aren’t going to crash the valves into the heads, and while the cam timing will be altered, it won’t be by more than a few degrees, which the computer and the variable valve timing system can easily compensate for, and even if it couldn’t, you could degree the cams by filing away some of the keyway to be able to adjust it back into spec.

  • You should engine swap used SxS can-am Maverick x3 turbo rr they have 195hp and can be modified to handle 500hp

  • 11:48 i just skipped, cause of title to see if your guy mentions it... in theory you can swap any parts from any engine... from any other engine that has a similar shape... but you have to keep in mind, density and friction resistance and sure enough temperature resistance... if you aren't driving it like a F1 car... and just ride it along... it should work ... if u start gassing that pedal... it will last u around 10 minutes, or as big the difference is between the two parts resistance wise.

  • Take the car back to a main dealer to identify the electrical fault.

  • Dealers don’t want to replace head gaskets. Only routine servicing.

  • Every dealer will tell you you need a new engine. Had an old b5 s4 and audi told me it needed a new engine and quoted me 12,000. However, it wasn't passing compression all it need was new gaskets for the V heads. I did the work and parts costed 300$.

  • You should give the scrap metal to other youtubers that melt down meteor and cast it into ingots or other forms

  • so good news .... mill the head , thick gasket and keep rolling

  • The feeler gauge they are using is VERY THICK. .004 thousandths is almost paper thin. .001 feeler gauge is super wobbly crazy thin, you can hardly push it because it will wrinkle. Most blocks are half the warp or less than the head. because the block is at least twice as thick and at least twice as strong. The head warps into a banana shape from overheat. When you surface it that only fixes the bottom. the top where the cams ride is still warped, this will cause the cams to seize, gall the aluminum or ive even seen the cam snap in half because its hardened steel and doesnt like rotating out of round. You can do quick fixes to get rid of a car but an overheat damages EVERYTHING. Warps the valve seats, and sometimes loosens the hardened seats in the aluminum head to the point they fall out later doing catastrophic engine damage, scuffs the pistons that swelled in the cylinder wall, takes the tension out of the piston rings which causes oil consumption, An overheat causes the OIL to thin out enough to loose oil cushioning and allows the rod bearing to contact the crank damaging the bearings. etc. etc. sensors fail early from being super hot. etc... bad bad bad.

  • Higher density and a higher stability are a no-brainer especially with the larger diameter valves............... Sometimes you need to research the processes.... The only thing that would surpass gravity casting is 3d printing a new head.. If BMW 3d printed the whole 3 cyl engine it would last atleast a million miles as 3d printing defies alot of laws of physics and the main one being thermal heat expansion and warpage.............   • I can't believe that it took all the time it did to figure out it was a head gasket problem. The very fact that it took such a short time to get so hot was a dead give away. I've had this problem on an Audi, the solution was. Get the head skimmed then, have a custom made gasket to bring the specs back into tolerance. A lot cheaper than a new engine🤔

  • LS6 swap. With supercharger and nitro.

  • Bud Replace the water pump thermostat lines and radiator please. Then get the head finished and use 2 head gaskets to make up the space which I dout you'd even need 2. I have done over 100 m54 overheat complete fixes

  • Serena head itself takes most of the heat energy I still and not understanding why The Machinist thought that they had was warped particularly badly, which it was not oh, and why he thought that that automatically method the block would be warped. But you end up with a good block. And I had that you can probably shave and put a shim head gasket on. I'm sure that they make them.

  • I call bs on what he is saying. No the way they are manufactured wont make much of a difference at all. Resurfacing the cylinder head by 0.15 mm or by the thinknes of 2 pices of paper will not be a problem at all.

  • what about a solid copper gasket, someone with a water jet, or a or a cnc laser cutter, could cut one from a sheet of copper. if you plane the head, use a thicker piece of copper sheet to make the gasket, the head and or the block, can also be machined for a stainless steel fire ring, in case the copper gasket is not up to the job, it works on dragsters, and high horse power turbo cars, where boost pressure could lift a regular gasket.

  • Why couldnt you have the head milled and use a thicker head hasket or even two? People do this all the time if you need to lower the compression.

  • old TDI Diesel owners going through this all the time ,warped heads ,engines going ok even after 5 years resurfacing and thicker head gasket. pressure is much less in petrol cylinders ,even with original head this could work

  • I would question the first machine shops diag. First they didn't clean the head first, second the small about warpage would not effect the timing, the ecm is smart enough to compensate. And the thicker head gasket is even better. Not to mention once the head is torqued to spec you would be surprised how much it can change the shape/flatness of the surface.

  • Sorry for my stupidity, but is it possible to shave the head and the pistons by the same amount to keep them from being too close to the valves? Im sure that's probably not possible, and someone will crucify me in the replies for even asking, but im not a car mechanic by any means, so i really don't care. Im just curious if it's possible. If not, then why?

  • The reality of all this is...stay away from Mini Coopers (learned the hard way) and anything that uses those garbage engines.

  • isn't it amazing that it took 24 hours of diagnostic AND an engine teardown to discover a blown head gasket when all the signs were apparent from the get go? Exotic cars, no matter the make are internal combustion engines; the bubbling, boiling overflow bottle is a dead giveaway just about every time.

  • Just resurface the head 0.3 mm and use the 0.3 mm thicker gasket if you decide to machine. I would go to 0.3 mm then you maintain overall mechanical geometry, just in case valve timing is critical for this application. It is a one time deal, do not try to go for bare minimum and think you have 2 go's. It is just a stupid 3 cylinder turbo, nothing special except for it is in a special car. Ohh yes, try to get BMW service info on resurfacing the head, they must have a repair/maintenance bulletin for this, that way you do not miss out on specific information that might be important. It would be interesting if you could also reduce risk of overheating by reducing turbo boost. If they crank out 70 HP more than mini cooper you bet the turbo boost is high, tuning it down a little would be good, less stress on engine components. Next question is can you reduce max charging load from the attached generator accordingly, does the generator expect engine to crank out max or can it be limited accordingly to engine max output you decide on, or can it sense max available power and reduce load accordingly all by itself. Or you can look at it from the opposite side: can you limit the max charge the generator wants to delivery to the batteries, if you reduce this by 15-20% the engine should not be required to run as hard. This would be the easiest way but i am not sure if this can be programmed in the car system, i would think this should be an operational parameter that can be changed by BMW engineers with right software. If this is not possible or not done automatically you are stuck at factory specs of the engine and run risk of hard use and overheating again.. Maybe this little engine is running at the limits. In short: is it possible to reduce engine load and still be able to charge batteries sufficient to use the car reliably. The car is beautiful though, wish i had the money. Cool project, Good luck.
